Technology

Technology: science or knowledge put into practical use to solve problems or invent useful tools.

(Source - YourDictionary)

Technology is simply a tool that enables us to fix issues or solve problems and to be able to complete desired tasks.

What does technology encompass?

Technology encompasses anything from a personal computer to a mobile phone using smartphone technology, and anything from a website to assistive technologies such as iPad applications (or ‘apps’).

Many technologies have made every day activities more accessible for people with disability.  One example is internet and telephone banking, which makes banking much easier for those with reduced mobility.

Another example is the rise in computer based employment and the ability to work from home, which has created new work opportunities for many people with disability.

What technology exists specifically for people with a disability?

Many very useful technologies have been specifically developed for the disability sector, to make performing everyday tasks more achievable, to help save time and make learning more accessible.

A number of iPad, tablet and smartphone apps have been developed for specific groups of people with disability.  Examples include apps to assist people with limited speech, with memory difficulties and with learning or developmental disability.

Many websites provide easy access to very helpful resources, such as guidance on home modifications and portals for equipment reviews.

What is the difference between Adaptive Technology and  Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology and adaptive technology are often used interchangeably but they actually mean slightly different things.

Assistive technology is the broader term and refers to any object or system that increases or maintains the capabilities of people with disabilities.  It may or may not be specifically designed or adapted.

Adaptive technology refers to specific adaptations to existing technologies or tools - changes to existing items that help you perform daily or specialised activities.

Adaptive technology is a subset of assistive technology and often refers specifically to electronic and information technology access.

Assistive technologies include new technologies, add-on technologies and complementary items, such as iPad frames to hold your iPad on a wheelchair, power-driven wheelchair controllers and home environmental controllers.  Examples of adaptive technologies include screen magnifiers and keyboard adaptors.

Regardless of the terms, all these items (assistive and adaptive technologies) are helpful tools to allow individuals to achieve everyday tasks.
